Client Worker/Counsellor

Purpose
The Client Worker/Counsellor is responsible for providing intake, crisis and short term and group counselling to survivors of sexual assault and to individuals who have been impacted by the sexual assault of family or friends.
A. Counselling
Duties and Responsibilities
- Intake
• Responsible for providing intake services including: information, support, advocacy and referrals to sexual assault survivors and their families, friends, advocates or supporters via office phone calls which come in on both the office and crisis line, and/or office walk-in clients. Client Worker/Counsellors are scheduled on intake on a rotating schedule between all members of the Counselling team.
• Responsible for conducting initial appointments and scheduling clients for ongoing counselling services. - Individual Counselling
• Provide crisis and short-term counselling all survivors of past or recent sexual assault and to those family/friends who have been impacted by the abuse of others in accordance with agency practice regarding accepted counselling theory and practice for working with those who have experience trauma, (Note: Service Limitations will apply)
• Provide information and referrals to other agencies and programs, as required.
• Provide sexual assault survivor assistance including accompaniments to police stations to make statements, assistance in the preparation for court and accompaniment to court.
• Maintain accurate, complete, consistent and updated client information and keep all such information confidential and safe, according to SSAIC policies
• Create and maintain records and reports related to client and program evaluation as required
• Work closely with other team members to ensure counselling services and programs are adhering to principles of practice for SSAIC which are feminist, trauma-informed and client-centered, frameworks while meeting criteria determined by funding agreements. - Group Counselling
• Conduct intake appointments for individuals wanting to access our group counselling program to determine readiness and appropriateness for group counselling
• Co-facilitate Psycho-educational groups in accordance with developed program content, practice as developed.
• Create and maintain group counselling, teaching/facilitation material, statistics, and assessment data and ensure that files and client information are created and stored according to SSAIC policies
B. Education/Other
• Deliver public education and community agency presentations as requested
• Represent SSAIC on committees, events and groups, as assigned by the Executive Director
• Network with other agencies and professionals on behalf of SSAIC and its clients
• Actively participate in fundraising activities promoted /sponsored by and/or conducted on behalf of SSAIC
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Qualifications
Education/Experience: A Bachelor Degree in Psychology (Educ. Psychology), Social Work, or other counselling degree, with a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in the field of sexual assault and/or domestic violence or a combination of the two. Candidate/Applicant must have solid counselling experience in trauma related work.
Knowledge/Skills
• Theory and practice in counselling adults and teens who have experienced violence and trauma as well as families/friends or support people who have also been impacted by the sexualized violence experienced by a survivor
• Understanding of the psychological, emotional, physical, behavioral and economic impacts of sexual assault
• Experience in working as a member of a counselling team
• Organizational and case management skills
• Crisis management and response experience
• Group facilitation techniques and experience
• Competency and experience working with diverse populations and individuals experiencing multiple trauma and challenges
• Computer literacy and familiarity with MS Office programs
Working Conditions
Ability to work in a high stress environment working with clients who have experienced a trauma and may present to staff in a crisis.
After hours, weekend and evening work may occasionally be required to facilitate support groups, support agency or community events so candidates must be willing to flex their hours.
Additional Requirements
An acceptable Criminal Record Check with a vulnerable sector search and proof of required degree is a requirement of this position.
